A verb may be finite or non-finite. A verb is said to be finite when tense and number affect it. It’s non-finite when tense or number doesn’t affect it.
The verb to collect doesn’t respond to change in number or tense. So, it’s a non-finite verb.
The present participle is a non-finite verb. It is used to make continuous tenses.
Apart from forming the continuous tense, the present participle can be used as an adjective.
