Grade 10 Grammar Lesson 42 More prepositions (3)
When do we use ‘during’?
Can ‘during’ be substituted with ‘throughout’ or ‘over’?
What is the difference between ‘for’, ‘by’ and ‘until’?
- We use during to talk about something that happens within a particular period of time. We may sometimes use in with the same meaning.
- We prefer during when the period is represented by an activity.
- We also use during to emphasize that something happens for the whole of a particular period of time. We may also use throughout to mean the same thing.
- We can use either during or over when we want to show that an activity goes on for a length of time within a period of time.Note that if we talk about short event or activity within a period of time, we prefer during.
- We use for to say how long something continues, and during to say when something happens.
- We use by to say that something happens or is achieved before a particular time.
- We use until (or till) to say that something continues up to a particular time.
