  • We normally report imperative sentences using ask/tell as the reporting verb. The reported clause is an infinitive clause.
  • We may use other verbs such as request, order, warn, advise, and command depending on the nature of the imperative sentences.
  • When we report offers, orders, intentions, requests etc, we can use an infinitive clause.
  • Some verbs are followed by an object + to infinitive. They include advise, ask, command, compel, encourage, expect, instruct, invite, order, persuade, recommend, request, tell, urge and warn.
  •  Some verbs can’t be followed by an object before a to infinitive clause. They include agree, demand, guarantee, hope, offer, promise, swear, threaten, volunteer and vow.
  •  Some verbs take either a that clause or a to infinitive clause. They include agree, demand, expect, guarantee, hope, promise, propose, request and vow.
